Refelections on PG13
This past Sunday…just last night I opened our DTP night up with a few Family Fued questions in order to address the volital topic of Movie Ratings! Always a HOT TOPIC for 12-14 year old students. But perhaps even hotter since I named our current Bible Study — PG13 Passages. We’ve been studying the passages of scripture that are fairly violent, steamy and general for a more mature audience. With an agenda to validate that the Bible is NOT boring! However, I began to sniff out that perhaps my “title” for the series was inadvertantly suggesting that I was commissioning early adolescents to view PG13 movies! WOW. That was NEVER my intention. So I asked this Family Feud question…What does (or ought to) Influence your Choice of Movies?
I surveyed myself ONE HUNDRED TIMES OVER and came up with the answers:
1. Yourself (discernment)
2. God
3. Parents
4. Others
I wanted students to recognize that God has given them great resources that ought to be used to get HIS paradigm for what fills their heads and ultimately their heart. Certainly a fabulous discussion considering the wide array of PG13 rating out right now from Blind Side and To Save a Life to movies like Drag Me to Hell and Ghosts of Girl Friends Past. Regardless of where you stand on the hot topic there are great web resources like Movie Guide and Plugged In. Please engage your student in the discussion and invite them to THINK. Asking would you want to be watching that with Jesus beside you. Just some thoughts…
